Your English-speaking tour driver will welcome you at the dock beside your cruise ship in Civitavecchia at 7:30am. (suggested time)
Once in Rome, you will drive straight to the Colosseum where you will meet your local, official English-speaking guide.
Your highly expertised English speaking guide will guide you around and into the Colosseum and the Roman forum explaining, in the most interesting and entertaining way, the importance and relevance of these historical sites, and their impact on modern society.
As a symbol of the Eternal City and the great, recreational center of ancient Rome, the Colosseum is certainly one of the most important monuments of ancient Rome. You will learn about the gladiators, the emperors, and society that attended to the gruesome spectacles, that this amphitheatre hosted. Here, over 50,000 people gathered to watch gory gladiator contests.
In your Colosseum tour, you will learn about all that is behind this site’s amazing, 4 century’ long history and get a sense of how Romans celebrated the best and worst of their society; either way, a fate grately influenced by the emperors’ overwhelming power.
After the Colosseum, your guide will lead you into the Roman forum, known as the heart of the ancient city and Roman Empire.
We will explore the politics, religions and myths of this great civilization, that left us with countless archeological discoveries of over 2,600 years of history.
Your official English-speaking guide will bring ancient Rome’s artifacts, which date back to the 6th century BC, to life as you wander through the ruins of the numerous temples, basilicas, palaces and shops. The first Roman civilization began here. Legendary for its contribution in Christianity’s evolution, it became the administrative and commercial center of ancient Rome.
This tour also features other sites of ancient Rome, such as the Arch of Constantine and Piazza Del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo.
For lunch, your tour driver will be happy to recommend one of the best, typical Roman restaurants or “Trattorias” in the area.
After lunch, you will enjoy a visit of the Pantheòn, the most well-preserved and influential building of ancient Rome. It is a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome. As the brick stamps on the side of the building reveal, it was built and sanctified between 118 AD and 125 AD.
On the way back to your cruise ship, you will drive to the ancient Appian Way where you will have the chance to stop and visit one of the famous Catacombs located in the area. Catacombs are underground burial places built underneath great, overpopulated cities in Italy, such as Rome, under which there are at least forty catacombs (that we know of), some discovered only in recent decades. Though catacombs first started off as customary burials in Christian traditions in the 2nd century, it became a generic solution for overcrowding situations and shortage of land. Many researchers have a theory that involves resorting to Catacombs, for burying persecuted Christians, in total secrecy. The soft, volcanic tuff rock under Rome is highly suitable for tunneling; it is softer when first exposed to air, but hardens afterwards. In some areas of Underground Rome, you will find miles-long tunnels in Catacombs that are even 4 stories-deep.
After the Catacombs, you’ll depart from Rome in order to be back at your cruise ship by 4.30 – 5.00pm.
This tour length approximately 9 hours in total and is conducted by an English-speaking tour driver, and an official, English-speaking guide for a privately-guided tour of the Colosseum, Palatine (Imperial Palace) and the Roman Forum.
