Your English-speaking chauffeur/guide will welcome you at the dock beside your cruise ship in Civitavecchia at 7:30am. (suggested time)
Once in Rome, we will drive straight to the Colosseum where you are going to meet your local, official English-speaking guide.
Your highly expertise English speaking guide will guide you around and into the Colosseum and the Roman forum telling you all stories and anecdotes that bring the ruins to life.
A symbol of the Eternal City and the entertainment center of ancient Rome, the Colosseum is certainly one of the most important monuments of ancient Rome. You will learn about the gladiators, the emperors, and the society that attended the bloody games held at the Colosseum. Here, over 50,000 people gathered to watch gory gladiator contests.
In your Colosseum tour, you will hear about the amazing four centuries of history behind it, and get a sense of how Romans celebrated the best and worst of their society; this was greatly influenced by the emperors’ overwhelming powers.
After the Colosseum, your guide will guide you into the Roman forum, known as the heart of the ancient city and the Roman Empire.
From its mythical beginnings to the rise of Christianity, we will explore the politics, religions and myths of this great civilization, bringing to life the numerous ruins of over 2,600 years of history.
Your official English-speaking guide will bring the artifacts of the ancient Roman forum, dating back to 6th century BC, to life as you wander through the ruins of numerous temples, basilicas, palaces, arches and shops. The first Roman civilization began here, and in turn became the administrative and commercial center of ancient Rome.
This tour also features other sites of ancient Rome, such as the Arch of Constantine and Piazza Del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo.
For lunch, your chauffeur/guide will be pleased to recommend some typical Roman restaurants or “Trattoria” in the area.
After lunch, we will take you to see and visit the Pantheòn, the most preserved and influential building of ancient Rome. It is a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome. As the brick stamps on the side of the building reveal, it was built and sanctified between 118 AD and 125 AD.
On the way back to your cruise ship, we will drive to the ancient Appian Way where you will have the chance to stop and visit one of the famous Catacombs located in the area. Catacombs are underground burial places under or near Rome, Italy, of which there are at least forty, some discovered only in recent decades. Though most famous for Christian burials, either in separate catacombs or mixed together, they began in the 2nd century, much as a response to overcrowding and shortage of land. Many scholars have written that Catacombs came about to help persecuted Christians bury their dead secretly. The soft, volcanic tuff rock under Rome is highly suitable for tunneling; it is softer when first exposed to air, but hardens afterwards. Many have kilometers of tunnels up to four stories (or layers).
We will depart from Rome in order to be back at the dock beside your cruise ship by 4.30 – 5.00pm.
This tour length approximately 9 hours in total and is conducted by an English-speaking driver/guide, and an official, English-speaking guide for a privately-guided tour of the Colosseum, Palatine (Imperial Palace) and the Roman Forum.
