Your final stop for the morning will be the famous Piazza Navona, one of the most beautiful oval shaped squares in Rome. Originally built as a stadium in the first century for athletic contests and chariot races, Piazza Navona is now lined with luxurious cafes and Baroque palaces and it hosts three elegant fountains. Created and placed on the ruins of what was once the stadium in the 15th century, from 1650 to the late 19th century the square was sometimes flooded in summer and used for water games, like naval battles.
The obelisk at the far end of Piazza Navona came from Egypt and was originally placed in the Circus of Maxentius but later moved to Piazza Navona. The modern piazza is a lively place where both locals and tourists like to hang out. Artists gather in the square to express there art, and there are many entertainers and souvenirs vendors.
Enjoy a delicious lunch in a typical Roman restaurant. Your driver will recommend the best locations for a memorable meal.
After lunch, your private tour of the Vatican city will begin. You will enjoy a private 2 and half-hour guided tour of the Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica with an official, English guide from the Vatican City. A truly memorable experience! You will start at the Vatican Museums; they are enormous. The structure holds about 1,500 rooms, but you will only see the best parts on your way to the Sistine Chapel.
Normally, this visit includes the Cortile Della Pigna, Belvedere, Pio Clementino Museum, the Gallery of Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries and the Gallery of Maps.
Depending on how the traffic inside the museums is coordinated, sometimes certain portions might be closed, so the itinerary can change from time to time.
From the Sistine Chapel you’ll go directly to St. Peter’s Basilica, where you will see the Pietà by Michelangelo, and other fantastic masterpieces by Bernini and Canova.
After St. Peter’s, you can stop to take some pictures of the square, shop for souvenirs or grab a drink. After such an exciting and interesting day, you’ll enjoy a relaxing ride back to the pier.
