You will drive through the countryside to reach, Tarquinia, one of the most important Etruscan cities. Where you will visit the Etruscan Museum and the tombs of the Necropolis.
Tarquinia has the greatest Etruscan museum in the World, with well-preserved sarcophagi, paintings, tombs, and frescoes from the 6th to 1st centuries BC, as well as the largest Etruscan necropolis.
Your private tour will continue to a visit the aristocratic Palazzo Vitelleschi, which is a masterpiece of Gothic-Renaissance architecture, but also now home to the National Museum.
You will then stop at the Etruscan necropolis. It is just outside of town, and it includes the most beautiful and well-preserved tombs of the ancient World, bearing witness to the cult of the dead of fascinating and enigmatic people. They are unique and only comparable with the Egyptian tombs.
You will leave to our next destination, Tuscania, a magnificent example of the Importance of Tuff as a construction material, as the village is entirely carved in it. Here your tour driver can recommend some typical restaurants, where you can enjoy a nice and relaxing lunch.
Speaking of Necropolis, there are many Roman and Etruscan burial sites in this Region, especially along the River banks.
They house Etruscan tombs that have preserved the personal belongings of a famous Etruscan family from IV- II cent. BC, which are now exposed in the Archaeological National Museum of S. Maria Del Riposo.
In the medieval historical center the beautiful Roman basilica of San Pietro stands on the old Etruscan acropolis, and has a 13th century façade with symbols of the Evangelists. The interiors have massive 11th century columns with beautiful symbols and decorative paving. A second church, Santa Maria Maggiore, now out of the social context, defenitely worth a visit.
