Our first stop will be Montalcino, a tenacious city made of history and will for good living.
Because of its success, throughout the centuries at resisting powers like Siena and Florence, Montalcino has also become the world capital of wine.
Montalcino is world famous as the birthplace of one of the finest wines of Italy, the “Brunello Di Montalcino”, a red, Italian wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino, located about 120 km south of Florence in the Tuscany wine region.
In 1879, the Province of Siena’s Ampelographic Commission determined, after a few years of controlled experiments, that Sangiovese and Brunello were the same grape variety.
The name Brunello evolved into the designation of the wine produced with 100% Sangiovese. In 1980, Brunello Di Montalcino was awarded the first Denominazione Di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) Montalcinodesignation, and today is one of Italy’s best-known and most expensive wines.
A short visit is also deserved by Montalcino town, particularly the medieval fortress and the town center. Then we will take you to visit a wine farm and vineyards, one of the famous Brunello Di Montalcino producers. Next to the cellar, there is a wine Tavern, open since 1972, where, with its easy going atmosphere, you can taste the typical dishes of the Tuscan tradition.
Another location you’ll visit is Pienza, another beautiful Renaissance city in Tuscany, Pienza is a hilltop village famous for its architectures, but also for the excellent sheep’s milk cheese pecorino.
You can stroll around this beautiful town of the Val D’Orcia where there are many charming, little, local grocery stores that sell Pecorino cheese and other local treats. The pecorino cheese of Pienza is probably one of the best in Italy, especially the version “sotto cenere” or “under ashes.”
The cheese has ancient origins and has probably been produced in the zone since man first settled here. Sometimes known as “Pecorino Della Val D’Orcia” or “Cacio Di Pienza,” it is produced between October and July, and seasoned for up to 2 months to give it its distinctive flavor.
A short drive away gets you to Montepulciano, movie set of Stephenie Meyer Twilight saga and one of the highest of Tuscany’s hilltop town.
The town is encircled by walls and inside the streets are cranned with renaissance style “Palazzi” and churches but the town is also very well known for its local wine “Vino nobile di Montepulciano” This town deserve a short visit where you can stroll around and see some of the main sights as the Duomo, Palazzo Piccolomini, and Palazzo Comunale.
