Full description of the tour

For this Ostia Antica and Cerveteri excursion, you will discover the greatness of Ancient civilizations.

Your English-speaking tour driver will meet you at the dock beside your ship at 8:00am, for this Ostia Antica and Cerveteri excursion.

First of all, explore Ostia Antica, where you will enjoy a walk in history, in the beautiful, well preserved excavations of the site, one of the most important examples of an authentic ancient “Roman City.”

Ostia Antica, Rome’s ancient seaport, in the meadows between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

It was founded in the 4th century BC as a military colony to guard the river mouth against seaborne invasions. In the following the centuries, when imports started the Capital via the Tiber River, Ostia gained prominence as the domestic landing for cargo boats, because of it’s favourable position.

It then became a flourishing commercial hub populated by over 100,000 people, whose apartment buildings, taverns, and grocery shops are still intact.
Ostia now covers over 10,000 acres around a main street which is more than a mile long. The streets are so quiet, and peaceful. It’s not hard to imagine children’s laughter and people’s chatter, while conducting a busy life in Ancient times.

As you stroll along Ostia’s main street, the Decumanus Maximus, you will retrace the paths of Ancient Romans, which used this street for their horse carriages and carts, where they conducted a very busy and social lifestyle

After the tour in Ostia we will drive to Cerveteri where your tour driver will be happy to suggest some typical Roman “trattorias” for a quick lunch.

After lunch your tour driver will take you to the most famous attraction of Cerveteri, the “Necropoli della Banditaccia” (among others in the area), which has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site, because it is very well preserved and it covers an area of 400 ha (988 acres) only 10 of which can be visited, covering a total of 1,000 tombs, often housed in characteristic mounds.

Cerveteri is the largest, ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean area.

You will visit the necropolis where you’ll find some of the most important types of tombs from the IX to the II century BC. You can wander in the streets of this “city of the dead”, and enter its houses and take a trip back in time.

An easy thing to do thanks to the high tech equipments, audio-visual projections, virtual reconstructions, sound effects and 3D videos, to show you what the tombs would have looked like more than two thousand years ago, reproducing the atmospheres of the day and the treasures they conceal, hence the uniqueness of the tour.

Finally, you will drive you back to Civitavecchia in order to get back in perfect time to board your cruise ship.

*Upon request, an official archeologist E.S. guide can be provided for Ostia antica.
Certainly a private guided tour exclusively for you and your group makes the difference.

A professional English tour driver will welcome you at Civitavecchia Port. You will enjoy this private historical excursion, admiring the magnificent archeological wonders of Ostia Antica and Cerveteri.
