Your English-speaking tour driver will welcome you at the dock beside your ship in Livorno for this private Lucca and Carrara marble quarries tour.
Lucca is a mixture of Etruscan, Roman and Medieval settlements, which are still visible in the details of the city’s structure, historically, artistically, and architecturally. For example, Lucca is also famous for its predominant city walls! Tall walls from ancient times that are now repurposed as a beautiful tree-lined bike track.
After leaving Lucca you will head over to the Versilia coastline and stop in Pietrasanta!
You will have time for a wonderful lunch in a local trattoria. Next, you will head for the mountains, the “Apuan Alps” this is where marble has been extracted for centuries.
Carrara marble is very famous for the statuary quality, used by all of the most famous sculptors in the world, such as Michelangelo, Canova, and many more.
You will have a chance to visit a marble quarry and the Walter Danesi Heritage Museum, an open-air exhibition where you will learn about the tools and machineries used in the business.
If you’d like to spend more time learning about the Italian Marble, instead of exploring Lucca, you can visit one or two local art studios in Pietrasanta to watch as the artists actually convert the “white gold” into fabulous art works.
After your visit, you will take a ride back to the dock beside your ship in Livorno.
