|DROP OFF TIME||5:00pm (approximately)|
Your English-speaking tour driver will welcome you at the dock beside your cruise ship in Naples, for a day in Montecassino and Caserta.
You’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Palace of Caserta (optional guide if wanted), then on to Monte Cassino for a tour of the Abbey (a chance to buy some honey still made by the Benedictine Monks who live there), and a visit to the war cemeteries nearby.
Why did it take 25 years to build? Because it’s a magnificent, colossal wonder of architectural splendor with a vast complex of gardens, featuring ponds and fountains, and stretches 3km deep into the surrounding hills.
Built to rival the Palace of Versailles in France, the Reggia boasts 2,000 rooms of which 30 are Royal apartments and are sumptuously decorated with paintings, sculptures, enormous crystal chandeliers, gold-embossed walls and ceilings, and valuable furniture – wow!! No wonder the Supreme Command of the Allied Forces in the Mediterranean chose to have their headquarters there during WWII and, on a less serious note, Tom Cruise was there in 2005 filming “Mission Impossible 2.”
Perched at the summit of the mountain, this huge fortress-like structure was demolished to the ground by aerial bombing in 1944, killing the many authorities and civilians who had been inside; their resting places can be visited in the nearby war cemeteries. With over 4,000 in the British graveyard alone, we can only imagine the utter devastation the bombing caused.
The monastery has been completely reconstructed and faithfully restored to its former glory; we can appreciate how it must have originally appeared, with frescoes and mosaics intact.
At the end of the tour, you will return to Naples Port, in time to board your cruise ship.
Your private tour driver will welcome you in Naples Port, to take you for a wonderful excursion. Today, you’ll discover some of the hidden Gems of Southern Italy, enjoy the beautiful sceneries, the great features and enjoy lunch in one of the restaurants your driver.
