Your English-speaking chauffeur will meet you at the dock of your ship at 8:00am (suggested pick up time). You will have a private transfer from your cruise ship in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver. You will have a guided tour with one of our local, expert official English speaking guide through the Villa D’Este and its fabulous Garden built by Cardinal Ippolito D’Este at Tivoli and the magnificent Hadrina’s Villa, the summer estate of Emperor Hadrian.

With our local, expert official English speaking guide, enjoy an in-depth tour of the Hadrians Villa. Hadrian’s villa was a small town; there were baths, fountains, and large halls, all beautifully decorated with statues and mosaics, with very innovative style. Here, he could relax, away from the Roman mob and the flattering courtiers, and spend his time hunting.

One of the most spectacular areas of the villa is the Canopus, a dining hall overlooking a large canal which could accommodate hundreds of guests invited at Hadrian’s magnificent banquets. Another interesting area is the Teatro Marittimo, Hadrian’s headquarters and private retreat surrounded by a moat; it could be completely isolated by simply removing two wooden bridges.

For lunch our chauffeur/guide will be happy to suggest some typical restaurants in the area according to your needs and expectations.

After lunch we’ll visit the Villa D’este and its enchanting gardens. Tivoli was also the brainchild of one man, the powerful and ambitious Cardinal Ippolito D’este, who during the 1500’s, set out to transform an old Benedictine convent into a new Garden of Eden with more than 200 fountains laid out on sloping terraces alongside beautiful greenery.

Villa D’Este is perfect for a tour in the hot summertime; enjoy the coolness of waterfalls and sit in the shade of mighty ancient cypresses. Some of the most magnificent fountains have just been restored. Some of these include the Fontana dell’Organo, which has a water-operated organ inside that delivers music as water falls through, or le Fontane di Tivoli e Roma, reproductions, on a smaller scale, of the two cities.

After a relaxing and informative day in the Roman countryside, you’ll be driven back in perfect time to re board your cruise ship.

This tour length approximately 9 hours in total and is conducted by an English-speaking driver/guide, and once in Tivoli by an official English-speaking guide for a private guided tour through Hadrian’s Villa and Villa D’Este.
