Our English speaking chauffeur/guide will welcome you at the dock beside your cruise ship in Civitavecchia at 8.00am (suggested time). Your shore excursion to Tivoli begins with a brief stop along Via Tiburtina. The travertine marble used to construct the Colosseum was extracted at the quarry here, which is still in use today.

We will start then with a visit of Hadrian’s Villa, the summer residence of one of the most popular Roman Emperors, Hadrian. Walking through this amazingly preserved villa you will have the opportunity to admire some of its wonderful treasures, such as the Pecile (a faithful reconstruction of a porch of ancient Athens), the Naval Theatre, the large thermal baths, the Canpus (a faithful reproduction of an Egyptian shrine), and the Hadrian’s Villa Museum, filled with precious objects found during the excavations (including a copy of the Amazons by Phidias). Hadrian’s Villa is one of the Italian UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Villa is a monumental living complex that even today continues to display the lavishness and enormous power of Ancient Rome.

After we will drive to Tivoli where your chauffeur/guide will be happy to suggest some typical local restaurants in the area. We will then continue your tour with a visit of Villa d’Este, built by the grandson of Pope Alexander VI in the 16th century, one of the most beautiful palaces and gardens of Italy and perhaps of all Europe as well. Initiated and commissioned by Cardinal of Ferrara Ippolito D’Este, when he was elected Governor of Tivoli. The entire complex is structured by a geometric system of paths, ramps, and steps altered around fountains, crypts, and arched walkways; it is defined as the peak of European garden concepts. This Villa homed Lucrezia Borgia’s son, famous for its unbelievable beautyful gardens, marvelous fountains, and centenary threes.

After a relaxing and informative day in the Roman countryside, you’ll be driven back in perfect time to re board your cruise ship.

This tour lenght approximately 9 hours in total and is conducted by an English-speaking driver/guide that will not enter sites but drive you around and show you places, pointing out things while explaining what they are, as well as stopping at the places that require a visit and helping you access them.
