Our destination is the beautiful town of Syracuse in the southern part of the Island. Enjoy a very special introduction to the Sicilian coastline en-route.
Our 90 minute leisurely drive will take us down the eastern coastline of Sicily passing the “Piana of Catania”, the coast line of the Ionic sea and Iblei mountains, arriving in Syracuse, founded by ancient Greek Corinthians, the city of Siracusa, a World Heritage Site, is famous for its rich history, culture, amphitheatres, and as the birthplace of the greatest mathematician in classical antiquity and one of the greatest of all time: Archimedes. The city boasts one of the largest concentration of Greek ruins outside of Greece!
We will visit the archaeological area of Neapolis with is Greek theatre, the Roman amphitheatre and Latomia del Paradiso (with its Dionysius Ear) and the “Ara of Hyeron”. We will arrive at the ‘Ortigia Island’, the heart of the city and we will stroll along the ancient narrow streets, which still keep the Medieval influence, before arriving at the Duomo square, one of the city highlights. We will visit the Cathedral, built above a Greek Temple, which holds more than 2.500 years of history.
We will take in one of the more charming spot of Ortigia, the “Arethusa fountain” with its Papyrus plants, overlooking the Ionic sea. Time permitting, you can also visit some of the city’s other interesting sites, such as The Cathedral of Syracuse or Castello Maniace.
At the end of this tour, we will drive you back to your cruiseship.
