General

Enjoy a tour of two of Tuscany’s most famous hill towns. An English-speaking chauffeur/guide will be waiting for you at the Pier at the pre-arranged time you decide to start your shore excursion in Livorno. After driving through the idyllic countryside, you’ll arrive at Siena, the Gothic city of excellence, where your chauffeur/guide will introduce to you this fascinating city.

Wandering through the back-streets of Siena, you’ll soon be captivated by its history and culture, which is still very much part of everyday life in the city. Next, we will visit the magnificent Cathedral of Siena, and its significant library, Piazza del Campo, where we’ll enjoy a stroll through the Jewish Ghetto and talk of the famous Paliohorse race that takes place here every year. Discover Castellare degli Ugurgieri, a castle within a castle, and walk along some of Siena’s most elegant streets.

For lunch, your English-speaking driver/guide will be happy to suggest a few local restaurants where you can taste the local “Tuscan” cuisine, accompanied by local wines. After a scenic drive, we’ll arrive at the hill town of San Gimignano, whose medieval walls and narrow streets are typical of Tuscan hill towns. However, it is the surviving medieval skyscrapers that set this town apart from its neighbors.

Today, fourteen towers remain, reminding us of the Guelph and Ghibelline rivalry that caused a bitter civil war between the families and citizens of San Gimignano. In the morning, your guide in Siena will give you an introduction to San Gimignano, enabling you to enjoy the delights of this small walled town, as you enjoy a relaxing stroll beneath the crumbling medieval towers. In the afternoon, you’ll return to your ship to complete your shore excursion from Livorno.

This tour length is approximately 9 hours in total and is conducted by an English-speaking driver/guide that will not enter sites but drive you around and show you places, pointing out things while explaining what they are, as well as stopping at the places that require a visit and helping you access them.
