If you’re just in port for the day but still want to see all the major highlights of Rome, don’t miss this great opportunity.
This tour is especially designed for cruisers that have never been to Rome; it includes short stops at all the major sites in Rome, as well as free time for lunch. Your English-speaking chauffeur/guide will welcome you at the dock beside your ship in Civitavecchia at around 8.00am (suggested time). During the 75 minute drive into central Rome, you will bypass the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, the Circus Maximus, and the Palatine Hill, known for its ruins of ancient imperial palaces. Our first stop will be at the Colosseum, which dates back to 80 AD, and is probably the most impressive building of the Roman Empire.
There, we will give you some time to walk around the Colosseum to take photos and eventually visit it inside by your own.
After the Colosseum, we will drive by the Circus Maximus, an ancient Roman chariot racing stadium and mass entertainment venue. Next, you will see the Capitoline hill, one of Rome’s seven legendary hills, where you can enjoy a scenic point overlooking the Forum, where numerous foundations, columns and arches have survived the religious, civil and commercial hub of imperial Rome. Then, we will drive to the Pantheòn, the best-preserved example of an ancient, Roman monumental building, where you will have time to stop for pictures and visit this temple inside.
Our next stop is the Trevi Fountain, the most famous and arguably, the most beautiful fountain in all of Rome; legend says that if you toss a coin into the fountain over your left shoulder it will guarantee a return visit to the eternal city. For lunch, your chauffeur-guide will suggest some local typical trattorias in Trastevere, one of Rome’s most charming areas.
Our final stop in the afternoon is the St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican), which has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world. It is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites in the world.
Take time to enter St. Peter’s Basilica and admire the High Renaissance and baroque architecture. The church is almost overwhelming, with its grandeur of art in gold, marble and mosaics. Be sure not to miss Michelangelo’s exquisite Pieta, in the right nave as you enter the Basilica, which was completed when the young master was just in his 20s.
Be aware that security checks are required at the Vatican, and you should expect a wait to enter the Basilica. Time allowed inside the Basilica is based on the required wait time to enter. There is a dress code if you are to visit St. Peter’s Basilica. Shorts are not allowed for men or women; tank tops, bare shoulders, or short skirts are not permitted. Dress appropriately or they will turn you away from the entrance. Please come prepared, or you will be disappointed when you are turned away.
At around 3:00pm, we will drive back to the port in order to arrive at the dock beside your ship between 4:00-4:30pm.
This tour can be further customized and is conducted by a highly trained English-speaking chauffeur/guide that will not enter sites, but drive you around and show you places, pointing out things while explaining what they are, as well as stopping at the places that require a visit and helping you access them.
