Enjoy a day tour through the southern Tuscan Maremma off the beaten villages of Pitigliano, Sorano & Sovana that are considered the “tuff villages”, and are part of a very extensive area called the Tufo Archaeological Park characterized by the Vie Cave (also called Cavoni), real canyons trapped between suggestive and steep walls of tuff. Tufo or Tuff stone is a kind of volcanic rock that is heavily present in the area from which these cities are built.
Our tour driver will welcome you at the dock beside your cruise ship in Civitavecchia at 8.00am (suggested time). The journey will start immediately while you enjoy the enchanting views from the car by driving through the Tuscan Maremma countryside.
After about 1 hour drive, our first stop will be Pitigliano, a small Tuscan village in the province of Grosseto at 313 meters above sea level. It is positioned and dug on a tufa promontory and is simply extraordinary. The high walls of volcanic tuff, carved out by a thousand of caverns, project a series of tower-houses, thus heightening the picturesque feel of this medieval town. Here you will breathe the history of different eras and cultures just by walking the time-worn streets, from prehistoric, Etruscan, Roman, Middle Ages. You will feel simply like you are back in medieval times.
Pitigliano is also known as “Little Jerusalem” for its quaint narrow streets, the Jewish Ghetto and Synagogue. There has been a “Hebrew quarter” for more than half a millennia, and there is still a synagogue, kosher shops and traditions intact. The Jewish district (quartiere ebraico) is the most characteristic and charming section of town.
For lunch your tour driver will be happy to suggest some typical tradditional local restaurants in the area, then we will proceed to Sorano.
Sorano is equally charming, with lovely cobbled streets, winding alleys and steep staircases leading from the hilltop. But hilltop living has come at a price. Once much larger, parts of the village have been lost to landslides over the centuries, the most significant striking in 1801. The Medieval old town of Sorano was first established as an Etruscan centre in the middle of the “land of tuff” spreading at the foot of the 14th century Orsini Castle, one of the largest military constructions built in that period. From Sorano we will proceed to Sovana, another authentic medieval town.
Sovana has (fortunately) maintained its most endearing characteristics – avoiding the Baroque restyling that altered so many churches, monuments and towns in this area. Small in comparison to Sorano and Pitigliano, actually almost tiny, it has managed to retain a charm that is perfect for a quick stroll: the landscape, the food, the wine and the Parco Archeologico Città del Tufo. Particularly suited for those who don’t like walking up and down hill because even though positioned on the hilltop, the town is laid out in a flat street plan.
From here your driver will bring you back to Civitavecchia in prefect time to board your cruise ship.
