Our English-speaking tour driver will welcome you at the dock of your ship. This excursion combines a brief visit to Pisa to admire “Piazza dei Miracoli” and the famous “Leaning Tower.” Then, we will drive through the lovely Tuscan countryside to enchanting Siena, one of Italy’s best preserved medieval towns, located in the heart of Tuscany. Siena, built on three hills and surrounded by well-preserved walls, is filled with fine examples of Gothic architecture and has one of the world’s most unique piazzas – il Campo – (shaped like a shell with scalloped edges). Of course, the world-famous Palio is an important part of Sienese identity, history and culture. Upon arrival in Siena, you will be transported back to the Middle Ages. You will have approximately 5 hours to explore Siena by walking, and your tour driver can suggest some great local trattoria for a typical “Tuscan” lunch.
While in Siena, you will be able to walk along the small medieval streets admiring the splendid palaces before ending up at the Cathedral and its Baptistery. In the Baptistery, you can see the beautiful interior with its lavish and intricate frescoes and a baptismal font from 1417, one of the greatest in all of Italy. The 13th century Cathedral, Il Duomo, is an architectural beauty with its greenish-black and white bands of colored marble. The floor has many inlaid works of art depicting Biblical and mythological subjects. Be sure to see the octagonal pulpit by Nicola Pisano; it is his masterpiece. In the chapel of the left transept is a glass box containing the arm of John the Baptist, said to be the one used to baptize Christ. While at the Duomo be sure to visit the Libreria Piccolomini, which is renowned for its well-preserved frescoes. After you break for lunch, you will want to visit the Piazza del Campo, one of the most beautiful squares in the world. Also, make sure to take time to enjoy the Fonte Gaia (Fountain of Joy); this piazza is the site of the thrilling horse race (the Palio) held every year. Also of interest is the Ospedale di Santa Maria della Scale, a hospital from the Middle Ages, which is in the process of being transformed into a museum complex. In 1997, the hospital moved its services to a modern site, leaving the city with a treasure trove of art from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. You will be back to your ship by 6:00pm approx.
This tour length is approximately 9 hours and is conducted by an English-speaking tour driver.
