Your English-speaking tour driver will meet you at the dock beside your ship at 8:00am (suggested pick up time) and transfer you directly to Ostia Antica, the journey takes about 60-75 minutes. Once in Ostia, you will enjoy a walk in history, in the beautiful, well preserved excavations of Ostia Antica, one of the most important examples of an authentic ancient “Roman City.”

Ostia Antica, Rome’s ancient seaport, lies 40 miles from the seaport of Civitavecchia, in the meadows between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was founded in the 4th century BC as a military colony to guard the river mouth against seaborne invasions. Later, during the centuries when virtually all imports reached the Capital via the Tiber, Ostia gained prominence as the domestic landing for cargo boats. By the 2nd century AD, it had become a flourishing commercial center inhabited by over 100,000 people, whose apartment buildings, taverns, and grocery shops are still intact.

Although Ostia now sprawls over 10,000 acres around a main street that runs for more than a mile, it is still easy to imagine the local shepherds, who for centuries sheltered their animals amongst its ruins. They are an integral part of the tranquil Roman countryside; no modern houses, roads or telephone wires are visible on the horizon. The streets are so quiet, one hears only the crickets in the trees and perhaps the echoes of ancient children playing stickball.

As you walk along Ostia’s main street, the Decumanus Maximus, your feet settle into deep ruts left by carrucas, the four-wheeled carts used to ferry merchandise and baggage between Rome and Ostia. After the tour in Ostia we will drive to Cerveteri where your tour driver will be happy to suggest some typical Roman “trattorias” for a quick lunch.

After lunch your tour driver will take you to the most famous attraction of Cerveteri, the “Necropoli della Banditaccia” (among others in the area), which has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. It covers an area of 400 ha (988 acres) and only 10 ha can be visited, covering a total of 1,000 tombs, often housed in characteristic mounds.

Cerveteri is the largest, ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean area, while the one of Tarquinia has the best fresco walls in its tombs in all the Mediterranean countries. Here you will visit the necropolis where we find some of the most important types of tombs from the IX to the II century BC. You can get lost as you wander the streets of this “city of the dead”, enter its houses and take a trip back in time, aided by the multimedia installations, that use audiovisual projections, virtual reconstructions, sound and light effects and 3D videos to show you how the tombs would have looked like, more than two thousand years ago, reproducing the atmospheres of the day and the treasures they conceal.

After Cerveteri we will drive you back to Civitavecchia in order to get back in perfect time to board your cruise ship.

This tour length 8/9 hours approx. and is conducted by an English-speaking tour/driver that will not enter sites but drive you around and show you places, pointing out things while explaining what they are, as well as stopping at the places that require a visit and helping you access them.
