This tour is especially designed for those who wish to take a break from the crowd of the city and wants to enjoy the countryside of Rome, and in particular the highlights of Lake Bracciano and surrounding area and can be taking place from Rome or the port of Civitavecchia.
Your private tour begins with about a 1-hour drive to the Lazio countryside, before reaching the beautiful Lake Bracciano, from which the ancient Roman towns of Bracciano, Trevignano Romano, and Anguillara Sabazia.
First, we will reach the town of Bracciano, where we can give you some free time to walk through its charming, narrow streets in the historical center of the medieval village where you can appreciate its Medieval and Renaissance architecture.
Bracciano is also famous for its outstanding 15th century Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. Visited by John Kennedy and Tina Turner, the castle has gained modern fame for celebrity weddings like that of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
You will enjoy a tour of the castle rooms discovering furnishings many of which are miraculously unaltered by the passage of time. Inside the castle walls admire the Papalina Library and a series of magnificent reception halls hosting a remarkable collection of medieval weapons and fresco paintings. Well worth visiting is also the castle kitchen in which there is a fascinating collection of old cooking tools and the secret hanging garden facing the lake.
The guided tour inside the castle (included) is in English and lenght about one hour.
After, we will drive to Anguillara Sabazia, another beautiful town on Lake Bracciano. The ancient Roman town of Anguillara sits in a raised position just opposite Bracciano. Stroll along the lakeside promenade, browse for souvenirs or just relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
Then we will continue to Trevignano Romano where we have arranged an authentic lunch in a local ìVilla B&Bî nearby the lake. A rich variety of mixed starters and homemade ìpastaî together with mineral water and local wine will be served in the magical atmosphere on the veranda overlooking the Bracciano lake.
After lunch, we will continue to Sutri famous for its roman and etruscan remains that testify the antiquity of the human settlement in this area of Lazio; likley since the bronze age there were people here, but it’s during the etruscan period the city became a rich and politically important center, being on the trade routes of the centre of Italy; of course the city got farmers and artisans to work there, while the city was up to an hill for defensive reasons, as all the other etruscan cities.
You will get the chance to see several Necropolis and visit the majestic amphitheater, an exceptional work, dug entirely into a mass of tufo of the promontory and perfectly conserved because it remained underground until, in 1839, Savorelli from the Marches found it buried in the park of this villa. It is an arean with elliptical design, almost circular, with vomitorium, different orders of platforms and stands, which could have originally held up to 30,000 people.
Our last destination will be the picturesque village of Calcata, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking a wooded valley around thirty miles north of Rome. Re-settled by artists, the small medieval settlement is a low-key attraction which offers a taste of an alternative Italy. An interesting off-the-beaten-track destination. The village can only be visited on foot, and being built on a tuff cliff, it is reachable only through a steep road that will take you to the entrance. What you will discover with our personalized tour will be a picturesque cluster of houses of red tuff deliberately kept in their original state and populated by artists, writers and craftsmen, arrived after a mass abandonment by its first inhabitants, and who found the right inspiration in that stillness, a little “bohemien”. Its narrow streets are spreading from the central square, where you’ll find, strewn with great respect for the place, shops and art galleries. Each alley ends at the edge of the cliff offering travelers the panorama of the valley below.
After such an exciting and interesting day “off the beaten path”, you’ll enjoy a relaxing ride back to your hotel in Rome.
The Prices of the tour as described above includes: luxury vehicles and its expenses, entrance fee & guided tour of the Bracciano Castle, complete traditional lunch (including local wine & mineral water) and a highly trained tour driver English speaking for a narrative and informative day.
