Your English-speaking driver/guide will welcome you at the dock beside your cruise ship in Civitavecchia at 7:30am (suggested time). Ride the 90 minutes to Rome with comfort in your private vehicle. This is a perfect tour for those who would like to see some of the major highlights of Rome as well as have in-depth visits of the the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica.

Once arrived in Rome, your first stop will be the Piazza Venezia, where you can take a look at the Monument of Victor Emmanuel (the first Italian king) and Mussolini’s balcony.

Then if you wish, you will climb over the Capitoline Hill (one of Rome’s seven hills) and have your breath taken away by an amazing view over the Roman Forum. Next, you will drive to the Colosseum where your driver will give you a brief explanation and history. You will have the possibility to visit it inside or just admire this incredible construction and walk outside of it. We also recommend to pre-purchase your Coliseum tickets online (if you wish to enter).

Following the Colosseum, you’ll drive to the Pantheòn and the famous Trevi Fountain via the Aventine Hill (another of Rome’s seven hills).

The Trevi Fountain will be followed by the Piazza di Spagna, or Spanish Steps, where you will spend a short while before heading to the Borghese Gardens to see the panorama of Rome and the Vatican from the Pincio Terrace. Your final stop of the morning will be the famous Piazza Navona, one of the most beautiful squares in Rome. Originally built as a stadium in the first century for athletic contests and chariot races, Piazza Navona is lined with luxurious cafes and Baroque palaces and is the home to three lavish fountains. It was laid out in the 15th century on the ruins of the stadium. From 1650 to the late 19th century the square was sometimes flooded in summer and used for aquatic games and staged naval battles. The square still retains its oval shape. The obelisk at the far end of the picture came from Egypt and was originally in the Circus of Maxentius but later moved to Piazza Navona. The modern piazza is a lively place where both locals and tourists like to hang out. Artists gather in the sqaure to paint and there are many entertainers and vendors selling souvenirs.

At this point, you will probably want to stop for lunch. Your driver will present you the following options: a snack in Piazza Navona, some pizza in the cafeteria of the Vatican Museums, or a typical lunch in a little neighborhood restaurant.

After lunch, your private tour of the Vatican city will begin, the moment you’ve been waiting for. You will enjoy a private 2 and half hours guided tour of the Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica with an official, English-speaking guide from the Vatican City. A truly memorable experience! You will start at the Vatican Museums; this is enormous, and about 1,500 rooms, but you will only see the best parts on your way to the Sistine Chapel. Normally, this visit includes the Cortile Della Pigna, Belvedere, Pio Clementino Museum, the Gallery of Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries and the Gallery of Maps. Because of the way the traffic inside the museums is regulated, at some times, certain portions are closed off, so please note that the itinerary can change from time to time. Of course, you will end at the Sistine Chapel! From the Sistine Chapel you’ll go directly to St. Peter’s Basilica, where you will see the Pietà by Michelangelo and other fantastic masterpieces by Bernini and Canova. After St. Peter’s, you’ll want to take some pictures of the square, shop for souvenirs and/or grab a drink. After such an exciting and interesting day, you’ll enjoy a relaxing ride back to the pier.

This tour length approximately 9 hours in total and is conducted by an English-speaking driver/guide, and inside the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica by an official English-speaking guide (private guided tour).

Your tour/driver for ancient & renaissance Rome will not enter sites but drive you around and show you places, pointing out things while explaining what they are, as well as stopping at the places that require a visit and helping you access them.

  • We joined the private tour for a day at Rome from our RCL ship Symphony of the seas. Marco was our guide and he's the best out of all the guides from our entire trip. The private Vatican tour was simply amazing, it made a huge difference by having such a knowledgeable guide Alberto.

  • Like many people before us, we felt our all day tour with Gilberto was the best. He was right there waiting when we walked off the ship at 8:15. (He had been there since 7:30 in case we were allowed off the ship early) No need to take the shuttle bus to the outside of the port. Smooth ride into Rome with interesting conversation. Lots of time to wander the Colosseum because Gilberto had arranged the Skip the Line tickets (extra fee but totally worth it) then off to see lots more sites. Lunch in a lovely restaurant by a farmers market in the center of Rome. The afternoon was spent in the Vatican. Gilberto dropped us off in front of the entrance to meet our wonderful guide Chiara. He had arranged Skip the line tickets to get into the museum (again extra cost) and so began an amazing tour. Chiara gave us just the right amount of information that would assist us in enjoying and understanding what we were going to see in the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel. Amazing is the only way I can describe it. We finished with a walk in the Basilica. Gilberto picked us up and away we went back to the ship. Traffic wasn't too bad even though it was rush hour. Back to the ship about 6ish. All four of us said it was the best money we spent on the cruise.

  • My family and I visited Rome on our cruise. With a party of 7, we decided to have a private tour so we could have a personal experience and learn as much as we could about the rich history of Rome in the few hours we were there. We were greeted by our driver dockside and his pleasant and professional yet easy to talk to personality was a great start to the day. He showed us various sites before we met our tour guide outside the Colosseum. She was passionate about Rome and that was sensed throughout the day. This tour involved a lot of walking and outside was extremely hot. My group and I went inside the Vatican Museum & Sistine Chapel. This was a once in a lifetime experience. If I ever visit Italy again I will be using Discovery Tours Limousine Service Day Tours. Exceptional service and it was worth the money spent.
