“Notti d’Estate” Festival at Castel Sant’Angelo

From early July to early September, you may enjoy a full program of evening events including art, theater, music, culture and sports, enhancing every aspect of the two thousand year history of the monument.

For the occasion are exceptionally open to the public the Passetto, the Prisons historical, the Space Heater Clement VII (bathroom renaissance of the Popes); the Mole (the mill of the Castle). Castel Sant’Angelo opens its doors during the summer nights to offer both Romans and tourists a chance to experience a special visit in this suggestive landmark.
The schedule includes from Tuesday to Sunday guided tours into areas of the Castle to which access is usually denied to every day visitors:

The Cagliostra is a threefold ambience just above the Loggia of Pope Paul III. The main room is flanked by two dressing rooms respectively called ” The Room of the Stork ” and ” The room of the Dolphin”. The Pope himself, however, requested to turn it into a luxury prison intented to accomodate prisoners belonging to the upper classes. It wasn’t by chance that this ambience was named after one of the most illustrious people imprisoned here: the Count of Cagliostro.
The entire area was decorated by Luzio Luzi.

The Passetto di Borgo is a suggestive passageway of nearly 800 metres. It links the Castle to Vatican Palaces and it has been built on the ancient walls that delimited the Leonina Citadel.

The Historical Prisons are narrow cells used as prisons from the Renaissance age to the 17th century. Personalities such as Pope Paolo III Farnese, Pomponio Leto and Giuseppe Balsamo Known as The Count of Cagliostro have been imprisoned in these cells.
