Tuscany
Tuscany is one of twenty regions in Italy, the cradle of Renaissance art and Italian literature, is custodian of much prestigious, archaeological, architectural and artistic heritage, belonging to its vast cultural inheritance, which is maintained and conserved by our homeland. The region is located in the central, western part of the country, north of Rome and south of Genoa. It is bounded by the Apennine Mountains to the North and East, the Apuan Alps on the northwest and by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the West. Florence, the capital of the Tuscany region, is an art-history enthusiast’s dream but is not just history, art and architecture but also good food and fine wines ! The land of Chianti is not only well known in Italy, but also Worldwide. Tuscany has over 3000 years of history to look back on and is named after its pre-Roman inhabitants, the Etruscans, and was ruled by Rome for many centuries. Tuscany is one of the most prosperous agricultural regions in Italy, specializing in cereals, olives and olive oil, and wines, notably those of the Chianti district near Siena. The grapevines and olive groves of Tuscany that we so admire came from the eastern Mediterranean with the Etruscans. Tourism is important at the coastal resorts and the historical centres of the region. Increasingly, Tuscany is also a retirement centre of choice for well-to-do people from around the world, especially from northern Europe. And this being Tuscany, the lives of not just artists but also powerful political and merchant families, most prominently the Medici family, form an integral part of Tuscan history.
