Caserta & Monte Cassino

Your english speaking driver/guide will welcome you at the dock of your ship at 8:00am (suggested time) for an enjoyable day into an area that you will find magnificence and culture & history
We will Itinerary: We go straight up the motorway to enjoy a guided tour of the Palace of Caserta (optional guide if wanted) then it’s on to Monte Cassino for a tour of the Abbey (a chance to buy some honey still made by the Benedictine Monks who live there) and a visit to the War cemeteries nearby. Meet and greet you at your hotel or other pick up point your private chauffeur will be able to offer an informative day drive into this area, even talk about a great other area that this magnificent region has to offer
Caserta itself has the following to offer:
Caserta is famous for its Royal Palace or “Reggia” which was built between 1751 and 1776 by King Charles of Bourbon – why did it take 25 years to build? Because it’s a magnificent, colossal wonder of architectural splendor with a vast complex of gardens featuring ponds and fountains and stretching 3 kilometers far into the surrounding hills. Built to rival the Palace of Versailles in France, the Reggia boasts 2,000 rooms of which 30 are Royal apartments and are sumptuously decorated with paintings, sculptures, enormous crystal chandeliers, gold-embossed walls and ceilings and valuable furniture – wow!! No wonder the Supreme Command of the Allied Forces in the Mediterranean chose to have their HQ there during WWII and, on a more frivolous note, Tom Cruise was there in 2005 filming “Mission Impossible 2”.
The stark, imposing monastery of Monte Cassino is in complete contrast to the overt splendor of Caserta Palace. Perched at the summit of the mountain, this huge fortress-like structure was razed to the ground by aerial bombing in 1944, killing the many POWs and civilians who had been inside - their resting places can be visited in the nearby war cemeteries: with over 4,000 in the British graveyard alone we can only imagine the utter devastation the bombing caused.
The Abbey has been completely reconstructed and faithfully restored to its former glory and we can appreciate how it must have originally appeared, with frescoes and mosaics intact.
Bak to your ship by 5:00pm.
This Tour is conduct by an english speaking driver/guide that will not enter sites but drive you around and show you places, pointing out things while driving and explain what they are, stop at the places that require a visit and help you visit them.
