Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient seaport, lies fourty miles from the seaport of Civitavecchia, in the meadows between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was founded, probably in the 4th century BC, as a military colony to guard the river mouth against seaborne invasions. Later, during the centuries when virtually all imports reached the Capital via the Tiber, Ostia gained prominence as the domestic landing for cargo boats. By the 2nd century AD, it had become a flourishing commercial centre inhabited by upwards of 100,000 people, whose apartment buildings, taverns, and grocery shops are still intact. Although Ostia now sprawls over 10,000 acres, around a main street that runs for more than a mile, it is still easy to imagine the local shepherds who for centuries sheltered their animals amongst its ruins, for they are an integral part of the tranquil Roman countryside. No modern houses, roads or telephone wires are visible on the horizon. The streets are so quiet one hears only the crickets in the trees and perhaps the echoes of ancient children playing stickball. As you walk along Ostia's main street, the Decumanus Maximus, your feet settle into deep ruts left by carrucas, the four-wheeled carts used to ferry merchandise and baggage between Rome and Ostia.
After the tour your driver can suggest you some typical roman "Trattorias" for lunch and then drive back to Civitavecchia.
Along the way back to Civitavecchia you can consider an additional stop in Cerveteri. The most famous attraction of Cerveteri is the "Necropoli della Banditaccia" (amongs other in the area), which has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. It covers an area of 400 ha (988 acres) and only 10 ha can be visited, covering a total of 1.000 tombs, often housed in characteristic mounds.
Cerveteri is the largest ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean area, while the one of Tarquinia has the best fresco walls in its tombs in all over the Mediterranean Countries. 
You can visit the necropolis where we find some of the most important typologies of tombs from the IX to the II century B.C. A guided tour to the necropolis in Cerveteri can be organized upon request. Back at the dock of your ship at around 5.00pm.

Cancellation policy
Please, note that there will be no charge if you cancel your reservation by fax or e-mail within at least 15 days before date of requested service. If is not done in these terms, our company reserves the right to debit the “no show fee” on your credit card which is:

• Cancellation 1 week before date of requested service: No Penalty
• Cancellation 72 hours before date and time of requested service: 10% Penalty
• Cancellation 48 hours before date and time of requested service: 30% Penalty
• Cancellation 24 hours before date and time of requested service: 50% Penalty
• Cancellation less than 24 hours before the service fully charged.
